12/11/09 - Brookline vs. Weymouth
by Administrator on Saturday 12 December 2009
Brookline opened the 09-10 season on a positive note, as the Warriors beat the Weymouth Wildcats, 66-57. Starting the game on an early 6-0 run, Brookline looked poised to run the Wildcats ragged. Weymouth had other plans as they switched from man defense into a zone, and took a 17-10 lead forcing a Brookline timeout.
Brookline, led by the outstanding post play of Dante Davis(20pts, 9 rebounds) as well as Drew Levey(15pts, 11reb, 8 assists, 4 steals) and Eli Yannekis(6 pts, 3 assists) proceeded to go on a 17-2 run to eventually lead to an 8 point halftime lead(36-28).
"We started like we wanted and then lost our focus. Eli provided a huge spark in that second quarter and the team ball movement that ensued was fun to watch." commented the coach.
The third quarter was a battle back and forth as the lead remained at 8, even though Brookline had a chance to expand its once 14 point spread. Weymouth made a strong run in the 4th quarter, with 4 minutes to go, cutting the lead to 5 at one point. Brookline responded with a huge 3 from Jacob Page(9pts) and some timely baskets from Yannekis as the shot clock expired.
"Fouling negates hustle. Our defense tonight was poor as we let too many players into the paint off dribble penetrations and then sent them to the free throw line." said Fiedor. "But our guys showed a mental toughness in coming from behind and then handling Weymouth's run in the fourth quarter. It's great to start the season with a win."
Tuesday, the reigning Division 2 state champions of Milton come to the Schluntz Gym. Tip-off is 6:45
