1/12/10 - Brookline vs. Newton North
by Administrator on Thursday 14 January 2010
Brookline battled Newton North last night for 28 minutes, but it was the last 4 minutes of the 32 minute game that determined the outcome. With first place in the Bay State at stake, the Warriors, led by the outstanding play of senior tri-captain Tre Woodson(15pts, 5 rebs, 5 assists) had a chance to tie it 45-45 with a free throw. The shot rimmed out.
What ensued over the next 4 minutes of the game was a combination of outstanding Newton North play and poor play from the home team. Outscored 18-2, the Warriors went the entire 4th quarter without a basket(0-11 fgs) and exited the game hitting their last 13 points off of free throws. Final 63-46.
"For 28 minutes it was classic rivalry basketball." stated Coach Fiedor. 'Tre was the main force keeping us in the game. He kept Thorpe(10pts, 5 fouls) in check and hit major baskets, free throws, and dish offs when we needed them. Kelly was unstoppable tonight(33 pts, 15rebs)"
Trailing 13-9 after one, 29-21 at half and 38-30 after three, Brookline laid the press on and gradually worked their way back into it. Getting defensive stops, Michael Thorpe fouling out, and Bline attacking the basket, the free throw line (13-14 in that stretch) was gold as things shaped up for a classic finish at 45-44.
"When Thorpe went out, we needed to turn things up and show some killer instinct", commented Fiedor. 'It's something we lack and it showed tonight. I know the guys are upset, those last 4 minutes reminded everyone of our earlier Needham meltdown. Our mission now is to not let this kind of opportunity slip out of our hands again and move on to Friday's game and play a game for 32 minutes."
The Warriors were also led by Jacob Page(12 pts) and Dante Davis(14pts, 6 rebs).
