2/5/10 - Dedham vs Brookline
by Administrator on Saturday 06 February 2010

The Brookline Warriors qualified for the state playoffs last night by beating the Dedham Marauders in a wild and exciting overtime victory, 85-68. Starting the game out strong with a 6-0 run, Brookline forced the first timeout of the evening from their hosts, in what looked like the road to a blow out. That would never materialize as Dedham steadied themselves with outstanding play from Walch(17pts) and Clifford(14pts) and went into halftime up 27-21.

"We had great energy to start the game, knowing a win would put us into the playoffs," said Coach Fiedor. "The guys lost their focus on how to break down a half court zone defense and Dedham hurt us on the offensive glass."

Stuck in neutral on offense, Tre Woodson(20pts,5 rebs) stepped up in the third to spark a Brookline rally by scoring 8 pts in the first few minutes of the third, and put Brookline back on top by 2.

"It was obvious that he was playing inspired basketball. Everywhere you looked. . .there was Tre."

Again Dedham steadied themselves and went on a 6-0 run to retake the lead and force a Brookline timeout as the remainder of the game settled into a back and forth tug of war. The battle under the boards was ongoing throughout the night as Dante Davis(22pts, 13rebs) and Drew Levey(11pts, 9 rebs, 9 assists) kept the Warriors in business and within striking distance of the win.
Trailing by 2 with 8 seconds remaining, Jacob Page(21pts) split the top seem of the Dedham zone and hit a floater in the lane to tie it and send it to OT.

With a renewed sense of urgency and sharp shooting by Page, the Warriors exploded in overtime to outscore Dedham 22-5. The win is Brooklines 4th in a row and places the team at 10-6(10-4 in league) heading into the rivalry matchup with Newton North next Tuesday at Newton.

"I think we needed this type of game, even though it drives you nuts as a coach. First off, Dedham played a heck of a game and is a tough team to deal with, especially at home. But we had lost a number of close contests earlier in the season and now we are making the plays to win those games. Our late season conditioning really got us over the top tonight. We looked fresh in overtime and our defense as well as our offense, for that 4 minutes, was fantastic."
