Brookline Varsity prepares for the season opener this Friday, at Weymouth. The Warriors play a 22 game regular season schedule with 10 home games on tap. It's the most regular season games for the Brookline hoopsters in over 20 years, with a projected 16 playoff opponents in the mix. Last Friday's scrimmage, vs St. Johns of Shrewsbury, showed some high points against last years state finalist.

"We have what college football analysts would call a very high RPI rating," Coach Mark Fiedor commented. "That is part of the fun, we are a Division 1 team, so we should be testing ourselves against tough opponents." The coaches will be looking for several players to rise to the occasion, as the Warriors set their sights on a successful season. Schedule here

February 19th

The Brookline Warriors closed out their season with a resounding win over the Malden Tornados, 58-38. With only eight players active for duty, the Warriors called on Junior sharpshooter David Einhorn. He responded with a career high 19 points and 5 three pointers, as the junior guard found the range again and again. Tied at 23-23 at halftime, the Warriors picked up the pace in the second half, holding Malden to 15 points and exploiting their interior defense for 35 second half points. The Warriors point gaurd tandem of Jason Harris and Mitch Levey, combined for 13 assists and Drew Levey added 12 points as the evenings second leading scorer.

"It was a good ending for the seniors and those who are coming back." Fiedor said. "I have been looking for David to step up the entire year and today he did. With another 15 pounds of muscle on his body, he should make it his goal to be an impact player his senior year. He certainly has the mechanics to be a phenomenal shooter. They couldn't handle Mitch in the open floor and even though he didn't score that much today, he caused everyone on Malden to collapse to the paint. . .it opened things up for everyone else. Jason Harris also did an excellent job of hitting shots at the right time and dishing it off as always, plus some really solid defense, along with Matt Shuman. We even saw the Mackey Move from Alex in the second half. He just faked that defender out of his sox, and scored. I think the committment of these 8 guys really showed up today. They turned what could have been a dreary Monday consolation game, into a great memory. Kudos to them!"

Mitch Levey was voted Bay State League first team All-Star for the 2006-2007 season. "Mitch has come a long way this year both physically and mentally." Fiedor stated. "The other coaches in the league recognized this progress."

It was the first time in many years that Brookline only had one representative to the All-Star Team. "We have a few guys who could have been on that team like Jones or Kim, but with the league being so strong across the board it just didn't happen."

Boston Latin takes out Brookline in first round of Andover Tourney, 73-51

February 15th

Brookline drops last home game to Framingham, 74-54. Fighting back from being down 14-4, the Warriors went on a 16-4 run. Holding a 33-31 lead with a little over two minutes to go in the half, the Flyers responded closing the half on an 8-0 run up 39-33. The run continued into the second half, with another 12-0 run to put Framingham up 51-33. Brookline responded with a couple baskets to momentarily stop the bleeding and turn the momentum, but two turnovers and a couple Flyer baskets kept the game out of reach. "I would have liked to have a different outcome for Senior Night." Fiedor said, 'but they were better than us tonight. They needed this win to get into the playoffs and they played like it. We were basically playing for our own pride. I don't think some of our key guys were healthy and I think we lost the battle within ourselves regarding taking pride in our effort. We have a chance to recover some of that against Latin on Saturday."

February 13th

Brookline beats Dedham, 59-51. Up 23-22 at halftime, the Warriors were sparked off the bench in the second half by the passing of Matt Shuman and the hot shooting of Max Kim(17 points. . .14 in the second half). In what was a sloppy game, with 21 Brookline turnovers, the Warriors were able to make enough key plays to open up a 10 point lead and coast home for the win. Brookline gets back in action this Thursday at home against Framingham. It will be the seniors final home game.

February 12th

Warriors face off with Boston Latin at Andover HS this Saturday at 1:15pm. Finals are Monday with time TBA.

February 9th

Fitting into a long line of classic Brookline comebacks, the Warriors fought from 15 points down only to drop a heartstopper to Braintree in overtime, 65-64. In a game that was a tale of two halves of basketball, Brookline actually took the lead with 25 seconds remaining in regulation.

Starting out on a bad note, the Warriors turned the ball over 5 times the first 3 minutes of the ball game. The team also struggled from the three point line, shooting only 1-9 from the arc. Bucking the recent trend of solid, turnover free basketball, Brookline limped into halftime with 12 turnovers and only 12 points, behind 25-12.

"That was as bad as you could play, especially considering how we have really come together the last two games." Fiedor said. "I was hopeful we would play better, but I had no idea how well we would crank it up."

The second half saw a slow boil towards a reversal of fortune as Braintree opened it up to 15 and then did there best to hold on as the Warriors sharpshooters heated up. Trailing by 10 with a little under 5 minutes to play, Markus Jones hit one of his 4 second half three points shots to cut it to 7. Braintree scored a two, then Max Kim(20 pts and six 3's) hit a 3, Mitch Levey scored off an out of bounds play on the sideline and Kim hit another three. Kim's last 3 of regulation gave the Warriors a stunning 56-54 lead with just under 30 seconds remaining in the game. Braintree went to their star, Brian Ellis(32 points) to tie it at 56 with 14 seconds remaining. The Warriors again ran a play, but their final shot did not fall, sending the game to overtime.

Losing Max Kim to fouls in overtime, the Warriors turned to Mitch Levey who made several big shots against what seemed to be the entire Braintree squad. Braintree was able to take a one point lead 65-64, setting up the Warriors for their final looks at the basket.

"That was a great, great, effort in turning a poorly played game into a fantastic contest. The players kept making big plays time after time and never gave up when down double digits. It shows how the team has improved and has toughened up mentally. It's taken a long and strange ride to get here, but we're here. . .we are a true team. How can you not be proud of that effort?"

February 6th

Finally!! The Brookline Warriors went on the road and downed Natick, 75-46. Natick was looking to qualify for the tournament with their 10th win and the Warriors were looking to keep their distant playoff hopes alive. With a superb team effort on both offense, defense, and the boards, Brookline pulled away by halftime(41-25), and never looked back.
Led by the sharp shooting of Max Kim(19 points and 5 threes), Mitch Levey(17 points and 11 rebounds), Markus Jones(10 points), and Jason Harris(10 points), the Warriors seemed to jell together for the first time all year. "We looked like world beaters tonight, and I am happy for the players to get a taste of excellent basketball." Fiedor said. "Beating a playoff caliber team on the road and the way we did it should give our guys a serious boost of confidence. Everything clicked tonight, we were relaxed offensively, played excellent full court pressure defense, and out rebounded a much larger team." Going with a smaller, quicker, line up, loaded with shooters and dribble penetrators, the Natick Redmen had no answer for the Warrior offensive approach. Using motion and isolations, Mitch Levey, Jason Harris, and Markus Jones were able to penetrate the Natick defense intelligently all evening. The Warriors used their position in the paint to either go all the way for the basket, or kick it out to the waiting shooters on the wings. The Warriors shot an incredible 68% on the night from the field and turned the ball over only 6 times for the game(a season low).

Heartbreaker!! With the Warriors leading 59-58 and Needham inbounding the ball with 2.3 seconds on the clock under Brooklines basket, Needham guard Sam Baptist hit a 12 foot baseline running jumper as the buzzer sounded to win it for the Flyers.

Trailing 32-25 at halftime, the Warriors went small in the second half and rallied to take a lead with 5 minutes of great defense and excellent team play. Up 44-38, Brookline hit a scoring drought allowing Needham to rally back and tie. The Warriors then surged again under the scoring of Markus Jones(15 points and 4 three pointers the second half),Mitch Levey(2 baskets during the run) and a nice baseline layin by Jason Harris. The Flyers then made another run taking the lead 53-51, before the Warriors eventually took the lead at 59-58 leading to the final dramatics.

"We went to a smaller lineup the second half to match up better defensively and give us more flexibility offensively." Fiedor said. "I think is worked for us, but we had a few mental lapses defensively to let them back into the game after making nice runs."

Regarding the last shot by Needham: "We can't seem to catch a break. I honestly could tell it was going in the second he let it go. I think he probably could have bounced it off his head and it would have gone in. Sometimes as much as you want things to be different, its just not meant to be for whatever reason."

Regarding the season thus far: "I remember about 20 years ago my life wasn't going all that well and a great friend told me something that really turned me around. Don't ask why. . .why is this happening to me. It's the wrong question. Ask what. . .what is it that I need to learn about myself in order grow and change my weaknesses and turn them into strengths. I think for all the players and coaches, it's really tough to lose, especially games like tonight. But forget about the game, what is it teaching us about ourselves that needs to change. That's more important in the long run. Those are the things we use to build our lives around."

January 30th

Warriors drop close one to Wellesley, 65-62. Down 12, the Warriors made a comeback to bring the score to 62-60. With two opportunities to tie or take the lead, the Warriors were unable to convert leaving the comeback all for naught. Drew Levey led the scoring with 19 points, Markus Jones contributed 16 and Po Grant 10.

January 26th

Warriors fall to Weymouth 74-62. Jones leads Warriors with 20 points.

January 23rd

Warriors come up short at Newton North, 74-65. In a battle that was clearly more like the Brookline vs Newton games of recent years, both teams used mini runs to change game momentum. Newton seemed flat early, giving the Warriors the early lead. The Tigers recovered by halftime to go into the break up 39-34. Extending their Tiger lead to 9, Brookline came rushing back on the hot shooting of Max Kim(15 pts on five 3 pointers) and the court generalship of Mitchell Levey(game high 17 points). The Warriors found themselves down 53-50 with six minutes to play and possession, but they could get no closer, as the teams traded baskets and wild scrambles for loose rebounds the remainder of the way. "I know we lost." Fiedor said, "But it was the best basketball we have played this season". "I think the guys supported each other immensely tonight and we got contributions from lots of players at various times. I also thing the veterans offered some real competitive leadership. Honestly, if we want any chance to make the playoffs, we are going to have to bring this spirit and effort on Friday and beat Weymouth".

January 19th

The Warriors lose 48-44 to Framingham Flyers. Cold shooting (22%) the entire night leads to a 15 point first half and no Brookline player in double digits for entire game. Down 14 points at one point, the Warriors press got them back in the game. Tying the score at 40-40 and under two minutes to play, the Warriors stole the Flyers inbounds pass for a layup. The shot did not fall and a Framingham rebound and fast break led to a score and a lead that would not be relinquished.

"There is a big difference between the desire to play, and the will to win." stated Fiedor. "We played the last 7 minutes of the game, like we should have been playing all 32 minutes. This is one of those games that ruin my sleep. . .we didn't bring the will tonight, we were just playing basketball, and thats never enough in this league."

January 16th

The Warriors got their first road win of the season by downing the Rebels, 74-66. Led by the scoring of freshman Drew Levey(21 points), Markus Jones(15 points) and Pete Zak(12 points), Brookline opened up large leads a couple different times in the game. Unfortunately the Warriors were in a generous mood with the ball, giving the ball back to Walpole with 25 turnovers for the game and and incredible 30 fouls(2 players fouled out). The growing 24 point second half lead slipped down to 6 with under a minute remaining. Dave Einhorn(8 points) stepped to the line and calmly sank 4 free throws to extend the lead to 10, and salt away the game.

"It's a good win, because it was on the road, and we were down a couple players', Fiedor said. "Our front court played tremendous basketball today. Our backcourt did not. I think if we expect to do anything with this team and achieve some goals, we can't have 16 turnovers from the guys who handle the rock and we can't have anything but a team focus. I think we fell short in those two areas tonight and I expect these weaknesses to become strengths".

January 12th

Warriors drop home game to Braintree, 72-58. Wamps led by Brian Ellis's 23 points and 12 rebounds as Brookline has no answer for Wamps size on the boards.

January 9th

Brookline High School will host Middle School Night for Devotion School and Pierce School this Friday. Tip off for this event is 6:45 at the Schluntz Gym, as the Warriors take on Braintree in a pivotal Bay State battle.

January 9th

The Brookline Warriors, behind an overwhelming full court press and solid play from all 12 active players, beat the Norwood Mustangs 62-36. Opening up fast, Brookline kept Norwood from crossing half court 5 of their first 7 possessions while opening up a 39-18 halftime lead. Every Warrior got on the scoreboard, led by Drew Levey(12 points), Mitch Levey(9pts), Marcus Jones(7pts), and Tre Woodson(7pts). "We did exactly what we needed to do tonight". commented Fiedor. "We played great pressure defense, ran the floor, and took care of the basketball. The guys are coming together and a game like tonight helps us keep the momentum going."

January 5th

The Brookline Warriors got their first league win tonight at the Schluntz, beating Needham, 61-55. The Warriors were led in scoring by Markus Jones(15 points) and Max Kim. Kim found the hot hand with 5 three pointers that helped lift Brookline throughout the game.

The first half saw multiple substitutions for the Warriors, as 13 players saw action. Pressing full court man to man the entire time, the home team went into the half up 3 points.

"The game plan was to use as many players as possible to wear Needham down." Fiedor said. "Where our team is at currently, everyone needs to be ready when called on. I like some of the things that I saw. One thing that stood out, was that the players are communicating better with each other. With all the substitutions, not one player missed a defensive matchup."

The second half was a tightly contested affair, with the largest lead for the Warriors being 12 points. Needham surged back, cutting the lead to 3. The Warriors stabilized things with a three point play, the old fashion way, on a Mitch Levey(10 points) drive to the hoop.

"We did two things down the stretch that showed some growth as a team. We did not turn the ball over down the stretch, and we made some free throws at crucial times."

The win gives Brookline a modest 2 game win streak and sets them up for their next home game against Norwood on Tuesday.

"Tonight was better, but we have so much room for improvement on defense and our box outs. Those two areas allowed Needham to come back to life about 3 different times . We have a saying. . .good, better, best, never let it rest, until good is better, better than the best. It was better tonight, but we can't rest on that."

December 29th

The Brookline Warriors got 'the monkey of their backs' tonight at the Schluntz Gym by beating North Cambridge Catholic, 67-58, for the first win of the season. Using a zone defense to counter NCC's quickness, the Warriors got off to an early lead on the shooting of Jaheem Allah Smith(9 first half points) and Drew Levey(8 first half points and 13 rebounds for the game). Brookline headed into halftime up 34-25.

Following two scoring droughts from the Warriors early in the second half, NCC pulled even with the Warriors 43-43 on a 6-0 run. A transition reverse lay-up by Isak Grant seemed to spark life back into the Warriors offense, as Mitch Levey(20 points) and Markus Jones(15 points) took control at the offensive end to help the Warriors open up a 12 point lead.

"We did a good job tonight of deflecting the damage done by their scoring runs, with some runs of our own" , commented Fiedor. "We needed this win for our own mental health and confidence and the guys showed allot of hustle on defense and the glass."

The Warriors also had contributions from Jason Harris(6 points) and Jose Oviedo(3 points).

"Each game, we have shown improvement in most areas. With a young group like we have, our main objective is to work hard, stay positive about ourselves and our teammates, and improve our understanding and execution of what we are trying to do as a team. I think we are heading in the right direction, and tonight helps."

December 21st

Milton hits free throw with 0:00 on the clock to down Warriors, 52-51. Leading for almost the entire game, the Warriors failed to extend their lead by missing numerous free throws(5-15) and some key lay-ups. The game ending foul seemed to happen right after the final buzzer, but not according to the refs.

"This was a hard pill to swallow tonight. We made some mistakes down the stretch. . .and so did the refs. I've learned thats part of the game. If we aren't 5-15 from the line, it wouldn't come down to guys wearing the zebra suits." said Fiedor.

"We are better today, than we were on Tuesday, and last Friday. We can't get lost in this disappointment, what we need to do as a team is get back to work in the Gym and correct the things that will help us win these games."

December 19th

Warriors drop the road game to Weymouth, 76-67. The Warriors led by as much as 11 points in the first half and were up 31-30 at the break. Brookline was led in scoring by Mitch Levey(18 points), Max Kim(15 points), Drew Levey(11 points), and Jason Harris(10 points). The Warriors ended the game with 24 turnovers and only shot 5 free throws for the entire game.

"We played a great first 15 minutes(up 31-21) and the first 5 minutes of the second half(up 45-41), but we fell apart for about 6 minutes and that was the ball game. I think we did a good job on the boards, and a terrible job taking care of the ball. We have to correct that portion of the game." commented Coach Fiedor.

The Warriors were without the services of Markus Jones, Po Grant, and Tre Woodson due to health issues and the fatigue started to show at the defensive and offensive end of the floor the last half of the game.

"I liked the way we pushed the tempo early, the way we moved the ball at times, and the effect our press had during certain parts of the game. We also showed we can be tough on the boards if we choose to be."

Brookline drops season opener to Newton North 75-48. 25 turnovers and early jitters land team in the hole.

"We have our work cut out for us as a team. This was not what we expected tonight from ourselves. Newton is a very good unit and Paul always has those guys ready. Unfortunately we made them look even better with a number of breakdowns at both ends of the floor."

Both teams shot poorly, but the Tigers ended with a 54 to 26 rebounding edge, dominating the glass the entire evening.

"One thing that never happened tonight was us putting back to back to back positive plays together. We didn't have one run tonight and that is very unusual for a Brookline team."

Former Warrior standout, Clayton Barlow-Wilcox is named 3rd team ESPN ALL-AMERICAN for Division III basketball. The senior power forward led Carnegie Mellon to their best record in school history and the NCAA Tournament for the first time. Story here.

Brookline graduate, Jeff Adrien, was named to the BIG EAST ALL ROOKIE TEAM. The honor follows a super first season at UCONN that took many uninformed 'experts' by surprise. . .but not the Brookline Fans! See story.

February 26th

Brookline varsity to compete in Milton spring league beginning in April. The second year, 12 team league will be held at Milton HS.

February 25th

Justin Powell plays final college game for Franklin Pierce. Story here.

February 23rd

VJ Divine and Darren Martinez named to League All-Star team. "They are both great kids and headed off to play college ball. I think VJ is as hard a worker and has as big a heart as your going to see in the Brookline program. A dream would be to have 12 kids like him on every team I coach. Darren had a slow start to the season, but worked his way into being our best player the last half off the season and in my opinion one of the top 2 point gaurds in our league the last 5 games of the season. With lots of work on his jump shot this spring and summer, he will be a strong contributor to a program in Division 3 the next few years.

February 21st

Brookline closes out season with loss to New Bedford, 81-54. Brookline led in scoring by Darren Martinez and soph Jose Oviedo(8 points).

February 16th:

Warriors drop one in overtime to Framingham, 57-55. Trailing 37-31 with four minutes to play, Brookline went on an 11-1 run to take a 42-38 lead with a little over a minute remaining. After a Flyer hoop, a questionable 5 second call gave the ball back to Framingham with 40 seconds remaining. Framingham capitalized with 2 free throws with a little over 14 seconds to play tying the game at 42. Darren Martinez had a shot to win it at the buzzer, but the game headed to overtime where Framingham pulled out the win. "Missed free throws, missed layups and a truly terrible officials call. . .the guys played their hearts out, everyone played, but we are just not a very good shooting team. It's unfortunately been a struggle for us to put points on the board the whole season." coach commented. "But we have had players the last three games who are literally having to be taken out of games because they are playing so hard their body is cramping up. If you see where the team was at in the begining(0-5 and 32 ppg) to where we are now, the growth is obvious and the difference between being 12-7 and 7-12 is agonizingly minimal." The Warriors close out the season against New Bedford at the Schluntz on Tuesday. Tip-off is 7pm.

February 14th:

Warriors drop close one to Braintree, 54-47. Leading 23-18 at halftime, Brookline could not maintain the defensive effort into the second half as the Wamps scored 36 points in the final frame. The loss ends Brookline's playoff hopes knocking the Warriors out for the first time since the 92-93 season. "We played hard for the most part," commented Fiedor, "but we have not been able to consistantly put together a 32 minute physical and mental effort where we do the little things against the upper level teams in our league. " The Wamps second half surge consisted of multiple second shots, open jumpers and layins off cuts through the middle of the suddenly pourous Brookline zone defense. "They did exactly what we talked about during the halftime break. A high pick with cutters through the middle and wing pick for the skip pass and shot. It was frustrating to watch." The Warriors close out the season with a road game against Framingham and a home game against New Bedford next Tuesday night.

February 10th:

Brookline comes back in final seconds to force overtime, only to drop heartbreaker, 69-65 to Natick.

February 7th:

The Brookline Warriors down Needham, 63-41. Down 16-8, the Warriors went on a 23-5 run to close the half and never looked back. The Warrior defense seemed to continually frustrate Needham, holding them to 25 points the last 27 minutes of the game. During that 27 minute stretch, Brookline scored 55 points led by Darren Martinez(14 pts), Brian Milstone(12 pts), Mitch Levey(12 pts), Drew Harris(8 pts), Dan Mercurio(7 pts), and Marcus Jones(7 pts).

"That was the best defense and rebounding effort we have had this year. Needham is a very good team that has been on a roll and we just shut them down tonight." Fiedor commented. "I think the players played with the kind of passion tonight that fuels great D and that led to a transition game and early offense."

The Warriors host Natick at home this Friday.

February 4th:

Action shots from recent Warriors' games.

February 3rd:

Warriors drop tough one to Wellesley, 47-42.

January 31st:

Drew Harris explodes for 30 as Warriors beat Weymouth, 76-65. Traveling to Weymouth for their second meeting of the year, the Warriors put together their best team effort of the year and one of the great shooting performances in Brookline history from Drew Harris. Hitting on 10 of 13 three pointers, including 7 baskets in the first half and 3 in the second.

"Just an amazing shooting night for Drew, and yet it was a great team night as well." Fiedor commented. Under the guidance of point guard Darren Martinez(career high 15 assists and 0 turnovers) Brookline battled to a three point halftime lead of 39-36.

The second half saw Weymouth tie the score several times and even take a brief lead, but the Warriors came to life. Dan Mercurio(9pts), Leo Cornelius(9pts) and John Gioia's(14 points) led a surge that helped open up a ten point lead that would never be challenged.

"Dan, John, and Leo were great off the bench. That's 32 points from the pine. We said that one of the keys to us getting the win would be how the bench responded and they delivered." The win puts the playoffs within reach as the Warriors will need to win 4 of the next 6 to qualify.

January 27th:

Warriors fall to the Tigers 50-37. Trailing 23-15 at halftime and playing without the services of Captain VJ Divine, the Warriors couldn't muster enough offense the final six minutes to earn the upset. Brookline was led by Darren Martinez with 9 points and center Brian Milstone with a career high 12 rebounds.

"Brian stepped up and played as well as I've seen." Fiedor said. "I think the tempo of the game was exactly what we wanted. But with a team like Newton North who are well coached and have Anthony(11pts) and Corey(11pts) you have to play almost perfect basketball to win."

With the crowd emotion behind the home team and the Warriors closing the gap to 8 points with 6 minutes to go, Brookline got three consecutive open 3 pointers on the same possession. The shots would not fall. It was the closest they would come as the margin steadied at around 10. "When we play them, it's never a dull moment, but it's over now and we have to focus our attention to Weymouth on Tuesday."

January 24th:

VJ Divine's 16 rebounds and 14 points lead the Warriors over the Rebels of Walpole, 62-41. The scoring for Brookline was bolstered by Darren Martinez(13pts), Mitch Levey(9pts), Louis Dauphin(8pts) and Brian Milstone(6pts). The win sets the stage for the home rematch this Friday against Newton North. Tip-off at 3:45pm.

January 20th:

Divine layin with 45 seconds left gives Brookline the win over Framingham in a wild one, 49-48. Down 31-21 at halftime, the Warriors held Framingham to 17 points in the second half and stormed back for the win.

The team was led in scoring by Darren Martinez with 17 points and VJ Divine with 8 points and 11 rebounds. The slow first half was all but forgotten as the Warriors played the most tenacious defense of the year in the second half, at one point going on a 17-1 run and outscoring the Flyers 26-4.

With a 47-36 lead and 2 minutes remaining in the game, the Warriors made an attempt to give the game away. Commiting 6 turnovers in the next minute, the Flyers actually took a one point lead at 48-47 with 45 seconds to go.

But as was the case in the Milton game a few weeks ago, the Warriors regrouped and got the go ahead basket. The Flyers had the final fling at the hoop, but no less than 3 Warriors were there to contest the shot that went 5 feet wide.

"If you follow this program, and its history, it has been built on defense and heart." Fiedor commented. "That second half shutdown of Framingham was a team laying its heart out on the floor . . .it was Brookline Basketball in its purest form. Any former player that attended that game would be proud to have witnessed that effort. It was awesome."

January 19th:

Former Brookline Warrior star Justin Powell scores his 1000th point for Frankline Pierce College. Story here.

January 17th:

Wamps out shoot Warriors, 65-55 in Braintree. Mitch Levey leads Warriors with 15pts, but poor free throw shooting(8-20 for Brookline and 22-25 for Braintree) and multiple missed layups, cost Warriors a clear shot at a road victory. "This was a bad, bad night for shooting. I think our scheme was effective early, but we couldn't find the basket at numerous critical moments" Fiedor said. "It's like the Patriots game. They made more plays than we did. They shot almost 90 percent from the line, and they made layups. . .basic stuff that we didn't do. I think we see that we can clearly play on the same level, but unless we make more plays and maintain the mental focus for the entire game, the wins are gonna find other teams. I also think VJ Divine showed a lots of heart playing sick tonight."

January 13th:

Warriors go on the road and get the victory against Norwood, 69-65. John Gioia leads the team in scoring, with 14 points. Brookline had a balanced attack, scoring 40 points the first half, including 10 from Leo Cornelious. The Warrior scoring attack was spread across the team for the first time this season. Adding to Gioia's 14 and Cornelius's 10 were Mitch Levey(13pts), Drew Harris(11pts), Darren Martinez(11pts), VJ Divine(8pts and 10 rebounds). The Warriors employed a 3-2 and 2-3 zone for the first time this season as their primary defense. "We wanted to take away their muscle inside and force them to launch it," Fiedor commented. "It wasn't a great defensive effort, but it was good enough and our offensive play was all about team tonight."

January 10th:

Warriors fall to Needham, 72-59. Poor defensive effort and 20 turnovers lead way to loss. "They shot 20 free throws in the first half alone." commented Fiedor. "That means we didn't come ready to play mentally. We also didn't take a single charge(one for the entire game) during that stretch, even though they kept driving to the basket." The loss drops the Warriors to 2-6 and puts added significance on Friday's game and Brookline's future playoff chances. "We have to rise to the occasion, and the occasion is now."

January 6th:

The Brookline Men's basketball team won a thriller versus a tough Milton squad, 51-50 last night at Schluntz Gym. Drew Harris's 7 three pointers(21 points) and Darren Martinez's driving jump shot with 9 seconds left helped the Warriors prevail. With 20 seconds remaining and trailing 50-47, Brian Milstone was fouled going to the basket. Milstone calmly sank both ends of a one and one to make it 50-49, and Brookline fouled immediately on the inbounds with 16 seconds remaining. "We called timeout at 20 seconds to set our final strategy. The team didn't panic and kept a clear mind about what needed to be done." Fiedor said. Milton missed the front end of the one and one and VJ Divine(11 rebounds) collected the board and flipped it to Martinez on the outlet hash mark. Martinez drove the length of the floor, splitting two Milton defenders and pulled up for a 12 footer in the lane for a swish. The Warriors picked up immediately in a full court press. The pressure led to a Martinez deflection and steal as Coach Fiedor called a timeout with 1.9 seconds left and the win. The Warriors led for most of the night, but by no greater margin than 6 points. Milton's size was a factor as they stayed in a 3-2 zone the entire night. Taking the lead with a little under four minutes to play, it seemed like Milton had started to gain the momentum. "I think when we got down by 4 with under three minutes to go the guys responded like teams we've seen here in the past." Fiedor said. "They got tougher mentally, didn't panic, and made all the right moves. To me, this win is the biggest indicator of some growth in the team. We didnt play perfect, but we also didn't let our mistakes wreck our effort. They just pushed forward and grabbed the win." The Warriors were also bolstered by the strong defensive effort of Louis Dauphin and 10 points from Mitch Levey.

January 4th:

Brookline gets into the win column with 67-39 win over Weymouth. Ignited by the hot 3-pt shooting of Drew Harris(5 three pointers and 21 points) and outstanding team defense and rebounding(VJ Divine- 10 rebounds, Brian Milstone-6 rebounds), the Warriors opened up an early 12 point lead and never let it drop below 10. "We realized that our season was on the line tonight and the guys played with that edge for 32 minutes." Fiedor said. "We had contributions from everyone. . .Dauphin, Jones, and Cornelius gave us a great intesity spark coming off the bench. Mercurio hit a big basket as the shot clock expired and Mitch Levey(12 points) really helped put the game out of reach the last 7 minutes with solid play. The hard work the past week at practice showed on the court today." Brookline takes on a much improved Milton team Friday at the Schluntz. Tip-off is 6:45.

January 3rd:

Brookline vs Weymouth postponed until Wednesday night. Unpredictable northeast weather fakes out entire region.

December 28th:

Brookline falls to Bishop Chevrous of Maine, 60-37. Trailing 19-14 at halftime and down 9 at 42-33, the Warriors failed to score for the next seven minutes. The scoring drought allowed Chevrous to open up a solid double digit lead and secure the victory.

December 27th:

Last second shot from Warriors comes up short as Brookline falls 24-23 to Wilbur Cross of Conn. Playing in the Chelsea Holliday Tourney and minus a shot clock, the Warriors employed the old school 4 corners offense to open the floor and slow the game. "It's very difficult to employ that strategy when you are used to a 30 second shot clock." said Fiedor. "I think once the players fully settled into the concept the second half, it was a different game in our favor." In an ironic twist, Brookline has had both the highest scoring game ever in this tournament(100-96, five overtime win vs Iolanni, HI in 2002) and the lowest scoring game. Trailing 13-5 at halftime, the Warriors pulled in close with an 18-11 second half run and the shooting of Mitch Levey(11 pts) and Drew Harris(2 threes pointers).

December 22nd:

Warriors fall to Newton North, 53-34. Brookline had four players with 6 points for the game(Cornelius, M. Jones, Harris, and Dauphin). "We currently have kids who are playing great defensively and having difficulty finishing around the basket." said Fiedor. "We clearly had ur chances to keep our early lead, the players were giving everything they had effort wise. Ultimately, you have to score points to get the win. Our goal right now is to keep a great work ethic and attitude. At some point, I believe we will reach that tipping point where is all comes together. We have to keep working and believing in each other in order to find that turning point."

December 20th:

Dedham takes out Brookline 57-36. Warrior defense solid, but offense shoots 10% for the game from the field.

December 18th:

The Warriors open up 05-06 season with a 55-33 loss. Leading 24-22 at halftime, Brookline was able to muster only 9 second half points on 3 baskets and 3 foul shots. "We played a very strong defensive first half and even with horrendous free throw shooting(3-13) we still had a lead." Fiedor commented. "I cant fault our defensive effort. At some point, when you keep stopping them from scoring and you don't score, miss layups, and shoot bricks from the free throw line, your are going to run out of energy to stop the other team." Amherst took the lead with 10 minutes to go and continued to gradually extend the lead until the damn broke on the Warriors defense with 4 minutes remaining in the game. "I could care less about the final score. If you lose by 1 or 31, the issue for our team is mental toughness for 32 minutes. Tonight, we played 16 minutes of varsity basketball and thats not going to cut it."

December 14th:

10th grader, Zach Rosenblum named to Junior Varsity Coaching staff.

Coach Fiedor comments: "We are pleased to bring Zach on as an assistant coach for the program. His ambition is to be a coach and follow in the footsteps of people like Jeff Van Gundy, Mike Fratello, and Tom Moore of UConn. He is also the first student that I've ever hired to be on staff. He's doing a great job, and we are thrilled to have him".

Comments from Coach Rutherford: "I'm confident that if I ever get tossed from the game(like Gene Hackman in Hoosiers), that Zach can bring the boys home down the stretch."

December 13th:

The pizza pep rally is not at Upper Crust. . . .but is at Village Pizza House. The rally will take place from 7-8 on Dec. 17th at Village Pizza House located at 312 Washington Street in Brookline.

December 7th:

The Men's Varsity Roster for 2005-2006 is posted.

December 3rd:

Warriors traveled to Portland, ME to take on Portland HS. The 9 players who went played six, ten minute scrimmage sessions. The Warriors played reasonably well, including winning the last quarter on a buzzer beater by Louis Dauphin. Following the game, Portland hosted a banquet for both teams.

"We showed some promising signs for only practicing 4 days. One of the parents from Portland commented that he liked our team because, 'They play the game really, really hard'. I think our success this year will depend on great defense, hard play on the def and off boards, and taking full advantage of each players offensive talents in the areas they are strong. I think today was a good start for BHS basketball." Comments from Coach Fiedor.

December 2nd:
